You don’t have to look far into the past to remember a time when people in business saw social media as just a way to post photos of their kids, catch up with old high school friends or something teens used to share selfies while hanging out at the mall.

Guess what? Social Media is STILL about those things. Luckily for us, it’s not ONLY about those things. Those elements continuing to be part of what you find on Facebook hurts many small businesses because they treat their business page the same as their personal page. And that is a huge mistake.

First off, I hope you do have a business page. If not, and you are using your personal profile to promote your business you may be in violation of Facebook’s Terms of Service. Business pages are free, so there is no reason not to use one.  Let’s take a look at some DOs and DON’Ts for your business page on Facebook.

Facebook DON’Ts for your business page:

  • – Don’t post photos of your family unless they are directly involved in the business. This may seem like a no-brainer but you’d be surprised how many business owners think customers are interested in these. If they are, they’ll send a friend request to see them on your personal page.
  • – Avoid stories about family vacations or highlights of your kids little league games. Again, keep these to your personal page.
  • – Don’t flood your page with sales messages. Sales oriented posts should only make up about 20% of your total content. Any more than that can come across as spam and your followers will begin to ignore you.

Facebook DO’s for your business page:

  •    – Post interesting photos! Photos get far more likes, comments and shares than posts without them. Obviously you’ll want to showcase services or products you sell but remember, don’t post sales messaging more than 20% of the time. So what other photos can you post?
    •  > Photos of employees is fine if you are showing them doing their job, highlighting their work, honoring an anniversary with the company, etc.
    • > Posting photos of fun staff (non-work related) outings is ok too, it can humanize your page and your business. Just be careful to not overdo it with these types of photos.
    • > Post photos of upgraded equipment, enhancements to your office or improvements in the way you deliver products and services to customers. These can serve as sales messages, without coming across that way if you choose your verbiage carefully.
  • – Engage with your followers. Reply to their comments and posts on your page and acknowledge the reviews they leave, especially if they are negative! It shows you appreciate them and gives them a feeling of connection with you.

  • – Take advantage of the scheduling posts feature on your business page. If posting regular content is something you tend to forget, schedule them in advance. This makes it easy to spread posts throughout the day or week.

Before posting to your business page, stop and think of how it will look to a customer or client who doesn’t know you personally. Even if you know most of the people who “like” your page, there will still be people finding it through Google searches and other means. If they see unprofessional posts they’ll be less likely to follow you.

Other things to avoid include inside jokes or anecdotes that are directed at a small number of people. That’s not to say you can’t have fun and use humor – just make sure it’s mass appeal and of course family friendly!
